It is used for repairable and continuously operating equipment in an effort to reduce downtime and optimize <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On-time_performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on-time performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"calculate-equipment-availability\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various asset stakeholders &#8211; from design engineers to equipment operators and maintainers &#8211; have a stake in improving the availability of the equipment they are responsible for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">availability<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often interpreted together with two other, interconnected parameters: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/reliability-engineering\/#what-is-reliability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reliability<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/maintenance-definitions\/what-is-maintainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintainability<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You need to understand the trade-off relationship between the two to achieve the appropriate level of availability requirements. The industry classifies availability differently for different audiences, based on the type of downtime under consideration and the nature of the audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a design engineer may be concerned with availability at the design and product development stage &#8211; as opposed to maintenance personnel who may be more interested in how to keep assets healthy to improve their availability. One of the purposes of this metric is to understand the effects of downtime that have to be addressed during the design stage of the machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corrective downtime &#8211; and in turn its inherent availability &#8211; can normally be improved at the design stage by enhancing fault tolerance, machine ergonomics and\/or simplifying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/maintenance-definitions\/corrective-maintenance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corrective maintenance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In translation, <\/span><b>the easier the asset is to repair, the faster it can go back to work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine you have a machine where two components that are most likely to fail are positioned in a place that\u2019s hard to reach. Design engineers could implement an additional panel at the bottom of the machine. This would increase the reliability of the machine by increasing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/metrics\/mean-time-between-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he MTBF value<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and would contribute to better availability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different ways to achieve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/maintenance-definitions\/fault-tolerance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fault tolerance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most popular way is by incorporating redundancy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Create asset-specific maintenance programs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving maintenance programs over time is another effective way to improve overall asset availability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machines are often provided with a preventive maintenance schedule by their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/oem-original-equipment-manufacturer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OEMs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, such programs are not designed to provide an adequate level of maintenance for the machine through its entire life cycle. As a result, depending upon the operating circumstances where the machine is installed, there is a possibility of over-maintenance and under-maintenance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-maintenance could cause unintended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/planned-downtime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scheduled downtime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reduce availability. Similarly, under-maintenance could cause a premature failure of the machine, leading to unexpected downtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best approach to maximizing asset availability is to tailor the maintenance program to each asset and improve it regularly, based on the health and performance of the machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, we recommend running an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/strategies\/reliability-centered-maintenance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RCM analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/maintenance-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choose the best maintenance strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each asset or failure mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Implement a CMMS system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing a <a href=\"\/cmms\/\">CMMS<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the most effective ways to improve asset availability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CMMS automates the maintenance workflows that improve the efficiency of repair work and reduce machine downtime.
