So, whether you are running a proactive or reactive maintenance department, you should know how to effectively deal with breakdown maintenance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is breakdown maintenance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakdown maintenance is performed on an asset that has experienced failure, with the goal to restore it to an optimal operating condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"typical-breakdown-maintenance-workflow\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some use breakdown maintenance as a synonym for a reactive maintenance strategy, while others like to use it interchangeably with the likes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/maintenance-definitions\/corrective-maintenance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corrective maintenance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/emergency-maintenance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency maintenance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there ever was a firm consensus, it has been lost over the years &#8211; but we are not here to debate the nuances between actions and strategies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the purpose of this article, we are going to treat breakdown maintenance as a type of reactive maintenance work, not as a maintenance strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical breakdown maintenance workflow<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are probably familiar with a breakdown maintenance workflow. In a scenario where a low-priority asset fails, there will probably be no need to schedule emergency maintenance &#8211; the asset will be taken care of after more important work is done.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run-to-failure maintenance strategy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If technicians spend the majority of their day performing breakdown maintenance, that\u2019s a very bad sign for the organization\u2019s asset management. It means that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/maintenance-cost-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintenance costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are going up and that organizational productivity is going down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens when an organization doesn\u2019t have a plan on how to manage its assets. When they fail, technicians have to perform breakdown maintenance to get operations back up and running.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"using-CMMS-to-manage-breakdown-maintenance\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, the necessary resources (parts, tools, labor) to perform the repairs will be available. This could be called planned breakdown maintenance.
