When equipment is calibrated, you can be sure that the readings are accurate and precise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Equipment calibration programs are an essential part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/maintenance-definitions\/precision-maintenance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precision maintenance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will need to be carefully planned and executed to be successful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main categories for calibrating equipment:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Absolute calibration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where you compare the reading of your instrument to a known reference value. For example, you place a 1 kg mass on a scale and adjust the reading to 1 kg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Relative calibration<\/b> is a process where you compare instrument values to another instrument that is already calibrated. Here are a few of the reasons why you should prioritize proper equipment calibration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product quality and safety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one, product quality can be affected (i.e. improper recipe quantities, improper weights, etc.). Many products depend on precise additions of different materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us have slipped up while baking chocolate chip cookies \u2014 too much butter caused the cookie texture to be too soft. If we don\u2019t know precisely how much butter we added, how can we adjust?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be massively important in food and drug manufacturing, where imprecision can cause health risks to consumers. Similarly, calibration should be a regular part of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/blog\/cnc-machine-maintenance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNC machine maintenance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure they stay as precise as they need to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Process control<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way that calibration can affect your operation is through process control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say you need to use an oven in your process. A drifting temperature sensor could spell a disaster, leading to overheating or not fully drying a product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost savings<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>An alternative way to think about equipment calibration is in dollars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a cost associated with almost everything you are measuring at your plant. Temperature costs money to maintain. The flow of raw materials or products is money entering or exiting a process. Inaccurate electrical data could be a hidden cost in your energy bill. It goes on and on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want your operation to produce high-quality, reliable data. Each serves a specific need across a wide variety of industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Different-types-of-calibration.webp\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure calibration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure calibration is required in many industries working with gasses, steam, or hydraulics. The need may arise from industry requirements, or a desire to control the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these applications, pressure sensors, pressure gauges, and barometers are typically the devices needing calibration. The calibration can be done using either the absolute or the relative method.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature calibration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many industries, the temperature needs to be measured precisely. It is vital that thermometers and temperature sensors accurately reflect the process values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devices most often calibrated for temperature are<\/span><b> thermometers, temperature sensors, and thermistors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature is typically calibrated by placing the thermometer in a stable reference environment, and then comparing the reading to a standard or reference thermometer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic temperature sensors need to have both the electronics and the sensor calibrated.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flow calibration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process flow rate through a pipe or vessel is measured using a <\/span><b>flow meter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These flow meters often require precision for the desired flow rates, so that processes can be controlled effectively and safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many chemical processes need a precise flow of material at a specified rate during a certain process. If the material is not delivered in a precise and steady flow, the consequences can be disastrous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons (and many more), flow meter calibration should never be overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical calibration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By \u201celectrical calibration\u201d we mean ensuring that any instrument used to measure electrical properties is showing accurate measurements. This includes reading <\/span><b>voltage, current, resistance, inductance, capacitance, time, and frequency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To calibrate electrical devices, you will need to use specialized precision instruments to verify the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weetech-usa.com\/news-info\/tester-abc\/unit-under-test-uut-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Units Under Test (UUT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are reading properly. A <\/span><b>precision digital multimeter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can accomplish many of the calibrations required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanical calibration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanical calibration is used to correct any instrument measuring mechanical properties like <\/span><b>mass, volume, density, force, torque, flatness, and vibration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat use, mechanical stress, and temperature cycles can all cause mechanical instruments to drift. Under a temperature-controlled atmosphere, either absolute or relative calibration can be used, depending on the device and the needs of the tester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asset calibration standards<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many well-accepted industry standards will require the factory to regularly calibrate their devices, as well as maintain calibration records.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such standard is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/iso-9001-quality-management.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISO 9001<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which sets certain principles for managing the quality of products and services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from ISO 9001, there are other standards that you will need to follow, based on the industry you operate in:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfcfr\/cfrsearch.cfm?fr=820.72\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US CFR 21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Food &amp; Drug Administration regulations that outline calibration requirements similar to ISO 9001.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/ISO-IEC-17025-testing-and-calibration-laboratories.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISO 17025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 used in laboratories to show they generate valid results.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-40\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US CFR 40<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EPA rules) \u2014 focus on the protection of the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/assets\/files\/AboutTheCodes\/25\/Errata_25_17_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 promotes safety standards, and advocacy on fire and electrical hazards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, each instrument needs traceability \u2014 meaning a chain of calibrations all the way to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancecalibration.com\/blog\/si-units-and-physical-standards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SI standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is just another word for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metric system<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row kd_background_image_position=&#8221;vc_row-bg-position-top&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1687440273251{margin-top: 40px !important;}&#8221; el_class=&#8221;limble-page-blog-width&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"examples\">Standard equipment calibration process<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of equipment calibration depends on the type of instrument being calibrated and could have many case-specific steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that doesn\u2019t prevent us to present a general process, which is shown in the graph below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"https:\/\/limblecmms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/calibration-process-flow-diagram.webp\" width=\"501\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flow diagram for the calibration process. Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.callabmag.com\/metrology-related\/white-paper-getting-the-calibration-you-need\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callabmag<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recall that there are two main methods of calibration \u2014 absolute and relative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absolute method uses a known reference (such as the boiling point of water), while the relative method relies on another instrument that is already calibrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basic process for calibration is to compare the instrument with a known value. A relative calibration method might look like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expose a pressure gauge and a trusted calibrated pressure sensor to a common pressure source.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the reading once the device measures a known value.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjust the device being calibrated if it\u2019s measuring above or below the known value.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change the reading so that it matches the known number.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The method for changing the readings on devices can differ, but in general, there are two ways:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The mechanical method<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 twisting a knob or tightening a screw.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The electrical method<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 done through a calibration instrument or the device\u2019s user interface.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, let\u2019s also mention how, these days, you can buy devices that can be automatically calibrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the calibration process, always check the tolerance of the device being calibrated, and compare it to the device calibrating it. The calibrating device must have a larger tolerance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you want to calibrate a gauge to 0.1 mm tolerance, the calibrating device should have 0.01 or more tolerance (a rule of thumb is 10 times more).
